Lawmakers should pass E-Verify bills
Jan. 25, 2010

The guest opinion by Jim Runestad — “Time to stop hiring illegal workers” — was right on the mark.
Michigan House bills 4355 and 4969 are bills that would require employers to use the federal program E-Verify. It is a free software program that employers can use to check whether or not an employee is legally authorized to work in the U.S. E-Verify is fast, easy to use and extremely reliable.
It protects American workers by making it very difficult for employers to hire illegal aliens. Passage of those bills should be a no-brainer for the House, considering the Michigan unemployment rate.
The current state government seems to have forgotten whom they are supposed to be working for — it’s the people and not their own selfserving agendas.
If E-Verify bills are not delivered to Michigan citizens within three months, a tea party should be organized. This time, instead of dumping tea, we should dump politicians.
