PONTIAC -- At 7 p.m. tonight, Oakland County Commissioners plan to honor the late store guard Greg Wainio who was killed Jan. 14 when he tried to stop two robbery suspects in the parking lot of a Kmart store in Waterford. Waino was dragged to his death as the man and woman drove off after Wainio tried to apprehend them, police said.

Commissioner Jim Runestad, R-White Lake, said today he planned to present a proclamation to the Wainio family, including Wainio's wife Julie Wainio and the couple's seven children., in the Commissioners Auditorium, 1200 N. Telegraph in Pontiac. Waterford commissioners Thomas Middleton and John Scott will join Runestad in honoring the family, Runestad said.

A Kmart representative is to be present and to announce a bowling fundraiser on behalf of family, Runestad said. The fundraiser is to be Friday at 8 pm. at Sterling Lanes, 33200 Schoenherr in Sterling Heights. Reservations for bowling are full but anyone is welcome to attend and donate, or donate by mail to the Greg Wainio Memorial Fund, c/o John Wainio, Box 1071, Grand Blanc 48480.

Wainio was patrolling the store when police say Samantha Lomasney, 20, and James Woodworth, 39, tried to escape with $400 worth of CDs. Both face first-degree murder charges and life in prison if convicted. In an attempt to escape, Lomasney, who was driving, hit two concrete poles, crushing Wainio. Lomasney and Woodworth are to be back in court Feb. 10.
